Piaggio Electric 3-Wheelers are Launched by Car & General in Kenya

A few startups have generated some activity in Kenya's electric motorcycle market. However, there hasn't been as much activity in the electric 3-wheeler market, with only a small number of startups operating there. With the recent introduction of some electric three-wheelers in Kenya by one of the leading companies in the ICE motorcycle and three-wheeler sectors, things are set to drastically change.

In Kenya, Piaggio ICE three-wheelers have been officially sold by Car & General Trading Limited, a subsidiary of Car & General Kenya PLC, a company that is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, since 2012. In Kenya, Piaggio 3-wheelers with gas engines are now well-known.

Car & General recently introduced battery-electric versions of Piaggio's three-wheelers, building on this powerful brand. The introduction of electric three-wheelers by a major player is expected to provide a significant impetus for the industry, given the wide dealer and support network and pre-existing three-wheeler financing ecosystem. With the introduction of these two brand-new electric three-wheelers, Car & General Trading Limited is aiming to accelerate the electric vehicle revolution in Kenya.

Along with Mr. David Chesoni, Managing Director of Car & General Trading Limited, and other invited dignitaries, Mr. Dhiraj Tripathi, Vice President - Exports & Electric Vehicles - 2W & CV, Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd, and Mr. Vijay Gidoomal, Group CEO of Car & General unveiled the new vehicles. Since 2002, Car & General has been designated as the exclusive distributor of Piaggio three-wheelers in Kenya. The Italian Piaggio Group's Indian subsidiary, Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd (PVPL), is the country's top producer of small commercial vehicles and a pioneer in the field of three-wheeled electric mobility. In addition, C&G and Piaggio celebrated their 20-year partnership at the occasion. In East Africa, Car & General was the initial company to use three-wheelers as taxis.

Among other improvements, the new Ape E-City FX Max and Ape E-Xtra FX Max models have a better driving range, a 12" tire size that provides better ground clearance, and excellent grade ability. The Ape E-City FX Max and Ape E-Xtra FX Max, which come with a fixed battery option, are known for their exceptional Italian design heritage and feature striking graphics and a modern, stylish bezel.

With its improved battery performance, the new Ape FX Max range offers longer runs, higher earnings, and a more affordable cost of ownership. To help with range anxiety, the vehicles also feature a reserve range of up to 5 km. Larger tires (twelve inches in diameter) improve handling and ride quality, allow drivers to better navigate uneven and rough terrain, and increase safety on longer routes to farther-off locations. The seat height in the car has also been modified to improve visibility and control while driving. With the help of advanced telematics 2.0, fleet owners can track and manage their vehicles more effectively while also providing drivers with improved navigation.

"As pioneers in 3W electric mobility, we are delighted to introduce our hugely successful and highly advanced range of 3W EVs – Ape E-City FX Max and Ape E-Xtra FX Max to Kenya," stated Mr. Diego Graffi, Chairman & MD, Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd., in expressing his thoughts. The new Ape FX Max range was created by our skilled team of engineers and R&D to guarantee the best possible value for customers by offering a competitive total cost of ownership along with improved range, grade ability, and load-carrying capacity. The new range, in our opinion, is an entrepreneur's best chance to get the most out of their venture. We express our gratitude to Car&General, our partners, for their unwavering belief in Piaggio and shared vision of a more sustainable and clean transportation future.

"As a Piaggio distributor, Car & General is committed to its mantra of making our customers smile in every street, in every town, with quality products and after-sales services," said Mr. Vijay Gidoomal, Group CEO of Car & General (Kenya) Plc, speaking at the launch.  This is consistent with Piaggio's mission to deliver innovative last-mile transportation solutions. Even as we promote Kenya's three-wheeler EV mission, the FX Max range will undoubtedly optimize our customers' profits thanks to its long range, warranty, low maintenance costs, and cutting-edge technology.
