Adarsh Swaika - India and Africa to Lead Global Change

Africa is not just a place of opportunity for India, but as a partner in shaping the global future, the envoy explained, describing India's engagement approach with the Global South. He emphasized that India was helpful in achieving permanent African Union membership in the G20 and continues to urge for global governance reforms that better reflect current realities.

Over the last decade, India's relationship with Africa has expanded considerably. Kenya, with its strong regional leadership, thriving economy, and youthful population, is key to this strategy, he stated.

On commerce and development, he stated that India is Kenya's third-largest commercial partner, with annual trade worth approximately $3.5 billion, and that Kenyan exports to India increased by nearly 80% the previous year. Nearly 200 Indian enterprises operate in Kenya in manufacturing, building, mining, furniture, pumps, medicines, and consumer products, employing tens of thousands of Kenyans.

Swaika attributed better bilateral relations to regular high-level interactions, including visits by indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kenya in 2016 and Kenyan President William Ruto to India in 2023.
