GUVNL To Procure 3,000 MW Thermal Power On Long-Term Basis

State-run Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) plans to procure 3,000 megawatt electricity from thermal power plants on long-term basis through competitive bidding process.

The apex power utility has also floated draft bid documents for the procurement of power and has sought views and comments from the interested shareholders.

According to GUVNL, the power will be procured from the thermal power plants — existing and new — set up on design, build, finance, own and operate basis. For power generation, these plants use coal allocated under the Union government’s Shakti (Scheme for Harnessing and Allocating Koyala Transparently in India) policy.

GUVNL intends to invite bids after obtaining Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (GERC) approval to the draft bid document. “Gujarat will start getting coal under Shakti scheme by year 2023. Hence, the commencement of power supply would tentatively begin from September 2023,” said sources.

The contract period for the power supply will be 15 years and the date of registration and process for submission of bids will be intimated by GUVNL separately once the state-run company secures GERC’s approval to the bid documents, GUVNL said in a notice.

GUVNL plans to invite bids for procurement of electricity from the thermal power plants after almost one decade. It had last sought bids from thermal power producers in year 2010, added sources.
