Concentrated Solar plus Thermal Storage Tender Launched By NTPC

Expressions of interest (EoI) are being accepted by NTPC to establish a 50 MW (net output at ex-bus) concentrated solar power (CSP) project that will have a thermal energy storage system and operate for eight hours during peak and non-solar hours. An interstate transmission system connection is required for the project.

"If the project is found commercially feasible, NTPC may proceed for further power purchase agreement for a period of 25 years or may not proceed with any project at this stage," the tender document states, based on the techno-commercial analysis of the responses in the EOI and additional discussions with interested parties.

The project will be developed by the potential developer under a build-own-operate model. By providing 50 MW of renewable energy power, it will guarantee that, during the eight hours of peak demand and non-solar hours, at least 70% of the contracted capacity in MW will be available annually. To charge the thermal energy storage device, it will solely need concentrated solar electricity.

"The thermal energy storage will be released to meet power needs either during two power blocks at 50 MW of full capacity or at a distributed partial load for the duration of the non-solar hours," the tender document states.
