The first Indian solar producer to supply 15,000 MW of solar modules was Adani Solar in December 2025. Kenya's imports of Indian solar PV goods increased 55 times year over year in the same year that the milestone was reached. Both figures indicate the same change: India's solar manufacturing industry, which for the majority of the previous ten years built mostly for local use, is now actively involved in exporting.

 

India is steadily emerging as a major global exporter of solar panels and renewable power energy equipment, supported by rapid expansion in domestic manufacturing capacity, strong policy backing, and rising global demand for clean energy solutions. The country’s solar module production has grown significantly from just 2.3 GW in FY14 to over 118 GW by mid-2025, establishing India as one of the leading solar manufacturing hubs in the world.

 

Alongside solar energy, India’s broader power and renewable energy sector is also witnessing strong growth. The country is increasingly exporting a wide range of power energy solutions including solar modules, wind energy components, power cables, inverters, transformers, and battery storage systems. This diversification is helping India strengthen its position in the global clean energy and power infrastructure supply chain. The first four months of FY26 saw a 55.5-fold increase in Kenya's imports of Indian solar PV products.

 

Kenya is not an exception. Sub-Saharan Africa is rapidly increasing its solar capacity due to a number of factors, including declining module costs, off-grid rural electrification initiatives, foreign money, and actual power shortages. India's solar producers are in a good position to cater to this market since their goods are affordable and their supply chains are becoming more compliant.

 

The most striking indication of where growth is projected to be in the near future is Kenya's import increase of 55.5 times in a single year. Development funding is flowing, solar installations in Africa are expanding, and Indian modules are becoming more affordable and certified. Together with Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Ghana, and South Africa are expanding. For Indian solar manufacturers who lack the resources to establish US-based manufacturing, this is the most readily accessible export market.
